Artificial Intelligence: how students and teachers are using it

Exploring AI in Elementary school: curricular unit overview

Age: 8-11 | Class: 25 students | Teacher: Cláudia Meirinhos*

Teacher Cláudia Meirinhos explores Artificial Intelligence with her elementary students. She prepared a learning adventure about generative AI literacy, filled with discoveries, learning, fun experiences and reflections on what AI is and how each student can contribute to creating a better AI in the future.

  • Follow the journey planned by this teacher, going through all the 7 moments and 19 lesson plans
  • Choose one of the moments to explore with your students, if they have the necessary prior knowledge about AI
  • Be inspired by these lesson plans and create your own journey!

Overview of the curricular unit

Follow the detailed lesson plans: Each moment brings together one or more lessons that explore an objective of the learning journey. Clicking on the moments gives access to detailed lesson plans.

(lessons 1-3): Students preconceptions about AI
The adventure begins by exploring the students’ perceptions of AI. To uncover their prior ideas about AI, a space for questions and curiosities was created. There is also a moment for playing.

(lessons 4-5): Importance of training data sets in AI
The unraveling of the mysteries behind the process of Machine Learning (ML) and training data sets begins. Students are introduced to practical examples of how AI is applied.

(lessons 6-10): Explore different applications of AI
One learns to experiment in a fun way with various AI tools, painting, drawing, and creating animations.

(lesson 11): Train AI with ethics, to save the oceans
Time is dedicated to important discussions about the ethical issues related to the use of AI. In a moment of action, students explore how AI can impact our lives and society positively or negatively, and they will try to save the Oceans.

(lessons 12-15): Train and program AI in Pictoblox – Cats and dogs
It’s time to get hands-on! Students have the opportunity to learn basic programming concepts and create their own AI projects. From simple commands to more complex ones, they apply their knowledge of programming Machine Learning and ‘text to speech’ AI, and begin to program.

(lessons 16-17): Train and program AI in Pictoblox Masks
It’s time to roll up their sleeves! Students have the opportunity to learn basic programming concepts and create their own AI projects. From simple to more complex commands, they apply their knowledge about programming Machine Learning and ‘text to speech’ AI, and start programming.

(lessons 18, 19): Students conceptions of AI before and after lessons
The students conclude the adventure with a reflection on everything they have learned. They are encouraged to share their experiences, perceptions, and lessons for the future. It is a moment of celebration and sharing of their learning.
