Students conceptions of AI, before and after lessons

This lesson is part of the curricular unit “Exploring AI in Primary School”, which consists of 7 moments: Moment 1, Moment 2, Moment 3, Moment 4, Moment 5, Moment 6, and Moment 7.

Overview of the curricular unit

Age

8 — 11

Class

25 students

Duration

6h

Teacher

Moment 7: Lessons 18 and 19

The students conclude the adventure with a reflection on everything they have learned. They are encouraged to share their experiences, perceptions and learning for the future. It’s a time to celebrate and share what they’ve learned.

Lesson 18

  • Objective · To check the evolution of the students’ conceptions of AI and the graphic evolution of the representation of AI
  • Duration · 60 minutes
  • Materials · Paper and colored pencils

  • Equipment · Computer
  • Activity · Individual drawing
  • Evaluation · Analysis of the drawings

In this lesson, students will be invited to express, through drawings, their current ideas about what AI is. This exercise aims to reflect the knowledge acquired over the previous lessons, culminating in what is called the “final drawing”.

To track the evolution of the concept of AI, the initial drawing (before), which represents the preconceptions about AI made at the first moment (lesson 2), is compared side by side with the final drawing (after), produced in this lesson after all the learning. Observe the evolution!

Lesson 19

  • Objective · To verify the evolution of students’ conceptions about AI and the graphical evolution of AI representation
  • Duration · 60 minutes
  • Activity · Group discussion
  • Assessment · Interest and participation in the activity

In this lesson, students are engaged in a group discussion to reflect on what they have learned about AI throughout the previous lessons. Through this exchange of ideas, the teacher can understand how their conceptions have evolved and transformed.

To start the conversation, some questions:

  • What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear about Artificial Intelligence?
  • What does Artificial Intelligence mean to you?
  • What do you know about Artificial Intelligence?
  • Where is Artificial Intelligence applied in our lives?
  • Have you ever talked to a Google Assistant, like Alexa or Siri?
  • Did you know that autonomous cars exist? Would you be willing to ride in one?
  • Do you think robots think like humans?
  • Do you believe robots have feelings? Or emotions?
  • What jobs can robots do?
  • Do you think robots will replace some professions?
  • Will everyone need to know how to work with Artificial Intelligence or have knowledge about this subject in the future?
  • How do you think Artificial Intelligence will be used in the future?

These questions aim to stimulate reflection and promote a critical analysis of the learning achieved throughout the 7 sessions planned by elementary teacher Cláudia Meirinhos.

All the lesson plans, materials and resources developed within school year 2021/2022, are proposed by teacher Cláudia Meirinhos, result of her master’s thesis: Download ebook (only available in Portuguese).
